Can FIFO workers claim travel to the airport?

Most FIFO workers assume the trip to the airport is a work expense — but under ATO rules it’s usually treated the same as normal commuting.

That means in many cases the cost of driving, parking, fuel or public transport to the departure airport is not tax deductible, even though you’re travelling for work.

The key factor is whether the travel happens before you start your shift or as part of performing your job.

When airport travel is NOT deductible

You generally cannot claim travel to the airport if:

  • You are travelling from home to start your swing
  • The employer provides the flight from the airport
  • The airport is just your departure point to work
  • You are not carrying bulky tools required for work

This is treated as ordinary home-to-work travel — the same as driving to an office job.

Even if you live far away or chose that location because of the FIFO role, the ATO still considers it private travel.

When airport travel CAN be deductible

You may be able to claim it if:

  • You travel between two workplaces (not home)
  • You are required to transport bulky equipment and there is no secure storage onsite
  • You are travelling directly between job locations during a swing
  • Your employer requires you to use your own vehicle as part of your duties

These situations are uncommon but legitimate when documented properly.

Common mistake

A common FIFO tax mistake is assuming that travel to the airport becomes deductible just because the flight is work-related. Under ATO rules, the journey from home to the airport is usually still treated as private travel.

The trip is often split like this:

  • Home to airport = private travel
  • Airport to worksite = work travel, often paid by the employer

Record keeping

If you qualify to claim:

  • Keep parking receipts
  • Keep toll records
  • Keep a travel diary showing why the trip was required for work
  • Note why tools could not be stored onsite

Without this, claims are commonly denied.
